Your neck is more than just a bridge between your head and body — it’s a vital pathway for blood flow, nerve communication, breath, posture and even emotional expression. Despite this it is one of the most overlooked areas in both fitness and beauty routines. Modern habits like long hours at the computer, forward head posture and chronic stress quietly tighten and compress this delicate space, which can contribute to brain fog, headaches, facial sagging, and anxiety. When you begin to care for your neck intentionally, you don’t just ease tension, you support your nervous system, enhance your appearance and restore energy from the inside out.
Why Neck Care Is Essential for Your Health
Your neck provides strong support for the head and a clear passage for the flow of blood, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, wastes and bio-electrical messages between the body and the brain. It is a vital channel between the head and cranial brain, and the rest of the body. It houses veins, arteries, nerves (including your vagus nerve), your windpipe, your pharynx (food-pipe), and your larynx (voice box). It is also where your spinal cord connects to your brain, and your spine connects to your skull. There is a lot of critical stuff that goes on in that small space.
The Hidden Effects of Neck Tension
The neck is also the place which carries a lot of our stress tension and is significantly affected by misalignment of posture anywhere else in the body and directly by forward head posture. Sitting for long periods can put strain on the neck, especially if you sit in a slouched or hunched position. As these things are all common in modern urban lifestyles, most people have issues with their neck. Tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles can lead to the following:
- inhibited flow of blood and oxygen to the brain leading to brain fog, decreased cognitive function and fatigue
- inhibited flow of lymph fluid leading to puffiness in the face, and a build-up of waste in the face and brain
- sagging and drawing down of the skin of the face
- breathing issues and mouth breathing
- headaches
- neck pain
- upper back pain
- compression of the vagus nerve leading to increased feelings of stress and anxiety
- digestive issues
The Throat Chakra: Pathway for Expression and Communication
From an energy perspective the neck is the location of the throat chakra. Chakras can be thought of as energy vortices or spiraling wheels of energy. The throat chakra includes the area from the shoulder girdle, up the neck to the chin, and along the cervical spine to the base of the skull. It is associated with your voice, with speaking up and expressing yourself, and also with hearing and being heard both by yourself and others. In biological terms the neck is the connector between the head and the rest of the body. In energetic terms this is seen as the bridge between the emotions and the mind, and between the lower chakras and the higher ones. The practices included here will help to balance the energy of your throat chakra as well as physically releasing this area.
How to Relax Your Neck and Shoulders Safely
The movements in the videos below will help to open and release your neck, shoulders, tongue, and jaw. The muscles in this area may be very tight and at first you may not be able to move them much, or you may get clicking or even graunching sounds. Be slow, gentle and intentional when moving, especially when moving your neck because of it’s connection to the spine, and the compact collection of nerves and veins flowing through there. It is a key and delicate area. Doing these practices daily will release tightness in the muscles and gradually create increased mobility in your neck, shoulders, jaw and tongue. Small movement and slow progress is okay. Have the intention of allowing your muscles, tendons and fascia (connective tissue) to open and release rather than forcing it to stretch. The best way to create change is through simple practices done consistently.
A Gentle, Somatic Approach to Neck Mobility
Do these practices with awareness, like a moving meditation. Tune in to how your body is feeling and what sensations it is expressing, and work gently with your body. You may like to play some soft, ambient music to help turn this into a daily self-care practice.
Creating a Daily Neck Care Ritual
I have split the movements into three separate videos. One focuses on the shoulders, one focuses on the neck and one focuses on the jaw. You can do all three together or do them separately through the day depending on what works for you in terms of time and energy. They make a good movement break if you are sitting or working on a computer for extended periods.
You could start by doing just one of these practices daily, and then build up to doing all three. Doing them at the same time as something that is already a daily habit for you such as brushing your teeth can help you to remember to do them daily, or you could put a reminder note on your phone, fridge or mirror. You can also do these movements while watching TV, though I recommend practicing them more mindfully if you have any issues with pain or strongly restricted movement.
